Outcome: Intermediate Outcome
The U.K., Cooperative Extension Service, Kenton County 4-H shooting sports volunteers, plan and facilitate youth shooting sports safety, practice, education, and activities. In conjunction with the Kenton County 4-H Council the groups indicated prior also plan and execute the youth opportunities to participate in contests across the state including the State Shooting Sports competition. The 4-H shooting sports project involve safely handling live ammunition and firearms with sustained attention – an observable cognitive skill for youth. Shooting sports projects offer opportunities for individuals to gain experience in decision making, socialization, communications, responsibility, and leadership.
Reviewing the educational program evaluations from the 2023 project season leads to the reasons why youth members return and participate. 4-H projects and programs develop a sense of belonging, capitalize on an interest, develop relationships, and provide engagement. Parental interviews and observations repeatedly identified – less isolation, increased self-esteem, and focus on a task.
Multiple successes were documented by the program during the 2023-2024 season beyond competitive success. An additional archery coach was recruited and trained, safety programs were attended by 100% of the participants, 25% of families are participating in fundraising, 2 grants for equipment have been received, and all active coaches completed the new State 4-H annual update as directed.
The Kenton County 4-H program provides the opportunity to lead youth to long term outcomes. Two senior members received graduation honor cords and a teen is serving as a certified teen leader.
Shooting sports projects provide an opportunity for families to practice and work together as well. Multiple families also attend competitions and practices together. The following year will provide an opportunity for hunter safety training and increased evaluation of active 4-H members.
