In order to promote physical health during recovery and teach practices for wellness, The Washington County Extension SNAP-Ed program assistant partnered with The Isaiah House Men’s Alcohol and Drug Rehab Center.  Weekly nutrition and cooking classes were held at the men’s rehab facility.  There were 8 participants with ages ranging from 25 to 55.  The information utilized was the ‘Healthy Choices for Everybody’ curriculum to help recovering addicts understand how nutrition and good food practices would impact their recovery from addiction.

88% of the men showed improvement in one or more food resource management practices, i.e. plan meals, compare prices, does not run out of food or uses grocery lists. Also, 75% more often followed the recommended practices of not allowing meat and dairy foods to sit out for more than two hours.  Furthermore 25% always follow the recommended practice.   All of these practices will help improve overall wellness and promote long-term health.
