Outdoor Adventure Camp
Author: Brandon Darst
Planning Unit: Madison County CES
Major Program: Agriculture & Natural Resources
Plan of Work: Expand Science, Engineering, Technology, and Math (STEM) Education
Outcome: Initial Outcome
Last year was the Pilot year for the 4-H Outdoor Adventure and our goal this year was to expand it to more participants from across Kentucky. The issue the CES tries to combat is youth being separated from nature. Through this camp, we reintroduce youth to the wonders of the natural world around them through hands on learning. Whether it was learning about outdoor cooking, filleting a fish, tracking, wildlife, orienteering, fire making, hiking, preserving food the youth were engaged and participated in all the classes that were offered.
The CES met throughout the year planning, marketing, and recruiting more teachers and leaders to assist. We had agents from across Kentucky, more Nature Reliance certified instructors, and KY Fish and Wildlife coming together to offer diverse topics.
This year we had around 50 participants and more counties involved which showed growth. The CES instructors also taught an inservice on Outdoor Adventure Camp during the KAE4-HA conference to help market to counties who may be interested for next year.
