Every year about 18,000 children enter school to begin learning here in Bullitt County. According to 2022 Kids Count, over 59% of the 900 students who will enter kindergarten are not ready to learn. Seen as a community leader, the Bullitt County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences was asked to serve on a County-wide committee for an annual school readiness event. Working with multiple community partners such as the Health Department, Police and Fire Departments, U of L Hospital, Chamber of Commerce, Dental professionals, Social service agencies, and the school system, the committee planned a fun-filled event for the whole family. On June 15 over 3,000 individuals and families attended. They were able to get school supplies, health check-ups and talk with community and school programs that will assist them in being ready to enter school. In casual conversation, the Agent overheard one family say that they were able to get several things their child needed to be ready for school and they didn't have to fight with the kids because they enjoyed all the fun activities offered between times.
