Farm Day for Young Leaders

Author: Beau Neal

Planning Unit: Woodford County CES

Major Program: Community Vitality and Leadership - ANR

Plan of Work: Leadership and Volunteer Development

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The public's connection to agriculture is being lost more and more each year.  The younger generation isn't as "tied" to the land as they once were, and their knowledge of agriculture and our food/fiber supply will continue to regress if we don't educate them. For this reason, we planned a Farm Day for the Young Leadership group from Woodford County High School. Partnering with teachers at WCHS, we planned a farm day consisting of two educational farm stops in the community.  Twenty students in the program got to tour Sycamore Farms (Cattle/grain/tobacco) and Eckart's Orchard (Commercial Horticulture/fruits/veg).  Farm owners/managers gave them insight into day-to-day operations on the farm, how everything operated, and the importance of agriculture in the community. Hopefully in the years to come, these students will take what they learned and be able to spread to their peers and classmates what a vital role agriculture plays in our community, state, and nation.
