Plan of Work: Educating Youth in Farm Knowledge and Skills

Outcome: Initial Outcome

As 4-H evolves to include a wide breadth of youths' modern interests, innovative educational opportunities and evaluation practices become necessary. Horsemanship and safety-based horse camp was created in response to a collaboration between the Boyd County 4-H certified horse club leaders and the Boyd County adult horse club leaders.   The camp was planned by leaders from both clubs and advertised on social media outlets.

The schedule included classes for beginners as well as senior club members to prepare for the State 4-H Horse Show.  Senior 4-H club members mentored novice campers and assisted them with their classes.

There were 25 attendees, 25 volunteers/presenters.

The post survey revealed that 100% of attendees learned at least 5 new vocabulary words related to equestrian world, all club members learned new skills and patience with assisting novice riders.  Ten of the 25 attendees had never ridden a horse.  All attendees indicated that they would like to continue participating in 4-H horse club events.

The Boyd County 4-H Agent, certified horse club leaders and Boyd Saddle Club members plan to offer more novice horse events in fall 2024 as well as another horse camp spring 2025.
