Youth with disabilities often have limited opportunities for integration within their communities.

Integration or inclusion means that people with disabilities have the same opportunities for involvement in meaningful and satisfying experiences as afforded other segments of the population. Sometimes people with disabilities will choose to participate with people with disabilities, but in other cases, they may want to participate in programs designed for the general public.

Inclusion involves creating environments where all people feel they are welcome and can access meaningful involvement. Because 4-H serves a broad spectrum of youth, people with disabilities should be included in the myriad of programs offered. Disability should not be a deterrent to any young person or adult volunteer who wishes to be involved with 4-H.  The Boyd County Complex Needs clubs began ten years ago.

The Boyd County 4-H Youth Development agent has continued offer new and educational inclusive club events and educational lessons.   This year one elementary teacher suggested a senior recognition day as other clubs.

The senior recognition day was planned with all complex needs 4-H members invited as well as close senior family members.  Cake and punch were served and the seniors were presented with their 4-H cords for their graduation ceremony while a collection of photos played on the screen in the background.

There were four seniors and each member had a parent or guardian attend as well as express their appreciation to the 4-H agent for including their child in such a memorable ceremony.  Two members’ parents told the agent that this was the first time they felt included in their school and class events.

The senior recognition ceremony will become an annual event for the complex needs club members to include and integrate all members.
