Kentucky-Tennessee Grain Day

Author: Traci Johnson

Planning Unit: Todd County CES

Major Program: Grains

Plan of Work: Agriculture Production and Management

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Grain production is an important source of farm income in Todd County.  Todd County ranks 7th in Kentucky for value of grain production at $64.4 million, according to the 2022 Census of Agriculture.  Challenges facing grain farmers include managing herbicide-resistant weeds and dealing with weather extremes that impact crop health and yields.

Because of the importance of grain production here, agriculture agents in Todd and Logan Counties in Kentucky and Montgomery and Robertson County in Tennessee offer Kentucky-Tennessee Grain Day each winter.   Guest speakers for the program included University of Kentucky and University of Tennessee extension specialists and a local television meteorologist.

190 grain farmers and agribusiness personnel attended the KY-TN Grain Day in February 2024 and learned about:

  • Grain Marketing and Risk Management
  • Weed Management and Herbicide Resistance
  • Use of Drones in Pesticide Applications
  • Soil Fertility & Sulfur Research in Corn
  • Weather Extremes and Impact

88 attendees provided feedback on the program with two-thirds reporting that knowledge gained at the Kentucky-Tennessee Grain Day would have an economic impact on their operation.  Farmers estimated the economic impact at nearly $600,000.  The event also provided continuing education credits for Certified Crop Advisors and Commercial Pesticide Applicators, supporting agribusiness in the area.
