Camp-Palooza

Planning Unit: Calloway County CES

Major Program: Camping

Plan of Work: 2023 4-H Health and Wellness Programs

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

On May 26, 2024 severe storms came through Western KY leaving major damage to West KY 4-H Camp. Due to losing power to camp and all of the food spoiling, our camping week was postponed. We had a lot of disappointed campers, so to make it up to them, all counties in the Calloway, Carlisle, Christian, Graves, and Hickman camping group decided to do something fun the week camp was supposed to be so our campers still had the chance to experience camp magic that week. Calloway and Graves counties partnered to offer a Camp-Palooza day the Thursday of our camping week. We started at 11am at the Calloway County Extension Office with lunch, moved into volunteer taught classes, water games, group games, and finished the evening with outdoor cooking and smores/banana boats around the campfire before everyone was picked up at 9pm. While we were working hard to make lemonade out of lemons, it was a great chance to get the counselors and campers together to get to know one another before we go to our rescheduled camp in July. All of the campers expressed how excited they were to go to camp later in the summer and parents expressed gratitude for us planning a day camp event in two days. Overall, Camp-Palooza strengthened our camping programs despite the cancelled and rescheduled camp dates.
