Water quality has a deep impact on everyone it touches.  In our day-to-day lives we don’t give much thought to the quality of our water because we are confident, we can go to the tap, open it up, and clean safe drinking water will come out.  According to the World Health Organization, in 2022 nearly 2.2 billion people in the world were without safely managed water services.

Even today many Kentuckians rely on groundwater as their primary source of drinking water.  The University of Kentucky estimates that 416,000 Kentuckians use water wells or springs as their primary source of water.  In Christian County, Little River is the main artery that runs from east to west across the county.  As it flows across the county it crosses farmland and urban environments.  As it flows it encounters many sources of contamination.  Once listed as an impaired stream by KY Division of Water (KDOW) it was the goal of the Little River Water Quality Consortium (LRWQC) to clean up Little River.

LRWQC is now working with KDOW on a 319 Grant to cleanup Little River.  Through the grant over 75 septic systems have been pumped out.   They have completed 9 septic repairs or replacements.  As they wrap up the septic repair program, they will move forward with an Agriculture BMP program to help clean up agriculture contamination.  When we look at water quality, it’s not so much about the water that touches us, but more about how we touch the water!!!
