According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention the prevalence of cognitive decline is 11.1% in adults in the United States. When cognition is impaired, it can have an impact on an individual’s overall health and well-being. Several factors increase the risk of cognitive decline, including age, genetics, lifestyle, and health conditions. Engaging in intellectually stimulating activities like reading can help lessen its effects. Reading serves as a powerful tool for mental stimulation, which can help reduce the risk of cognitive decline as we age. Reading can keep the mind sharp, improve memory retention, and even delay the onset of dementia-related diseases. Additionally, it can be a form of relaxation and stress relief. To combat this issue the Family and Consumer Science Agent started a book club. The Breathitt County Book Club which has blossomed into a vibrant community of 24 enthusiastic readers. This diverse group has delved into a wide array of genres, from mystery to historical fiction and memoirs, sparking lively discussions. Members have said that the club has pushed them to explore books they would have never chosen on their own, encouraging them to step outside their comfort zones. As a result, they have discovered new favorite authors and genres, enriching their reading experiences. In addition to the joy of reading, the club’s discussions have become a cornerstone of their shared experience. The supportive and inclusive atmosphere of the book club has created a space where everyone feels comfortable sharing their thoughts, leading to meaningful and often enlightening discussions.
