Major Program: Health

Plan of Work: Youth and Adults Overcome Life Situations by Acquiring Life Skills

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The Strong Girls Club is program created by the Taylor County Intermediate School Guidance Counselor, Christy Parks to help girls that do not have a strong female role model in their life to learn different life skills they may not have because of this. For the 2023-2024 school year, twelve girls in 3rd-6th grades were identified, with 100% of them being from low-income families.  Mrs. Parks reached out to me to partner with her in this endeavor and share some of the important life skills lessons 4-H has to offer.

During the school year some of the lessons I taught to the girls included how to make no-bake granola bars, basic sewing skills so they can learn how to mend cloths, and a holiday tree craft project (it was many of their first times using a hot glue gun). During lessons I share information about 4-H and upcoming club meetings and classes.

This year they were able to end the program with a visit to the Taylor County Extension Office. During their visit they tour the office and learned about Extension. It was 100% of the youth’s visit time at the Extension Office. They learned how to make two ingredient muffins out of a cake mix and can of pumpkin puree. Learned about stress management and coping skills from a presentation done by a Taylor County Extension Homemaker. Prepared their own lunch and did a canvas painting art class.
