Environmental Field Day

Planning Unit: Clay County CES

Major Program: Forest Education: Health, Management, and Utilization

Plan of Work: Sustaining Our Natural Resources

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Natural resources play a vital role in everyday life and meeting people’s needs. Clay County has over 300,000 acres of land with approximately 256,000 acres of forest land. Many youth across the county lack knowledge and appreciation of the surrounding environment. In order to increase awareness, the 4-H Youth Development Agent and ANR Agent collaborated and hosted Environmental Field Day at Big Double Creek Park in Redbird.

UK Cooperative Extension partnered with Red Bird Ranger District, Soil Conservation District, KY Department of Fish & Wildlife, KY Division of Waste Management, KY Furbearers, Letcher County Birds of Prey Program, and elementary teachers. There were over 212 elementary students, and 33 volunteers who participated at this event.

Students were divided into groups and had the opportunity to visit each station, which consisted of water quality, waste management, wildlife, birds of prey and much more. The volunteers had multiple hands-on activities to help engage students at each station. Students were given pre and post evaluations. After completion of the program, students indicated an increase of knowledge in how to better protect the environment, distinguish the difference between reducing, reusing and recycling products, and an increased interest of careers in natural resources and environmental sciences. Over 95% of students reported that they felt more knowledgeable about their environment.

The attendance rate increased drastically from previous Environmental Field Day Events. Overall, this event was a positive experience for everyone who attended. The Extension Service will continue to make the effort to expand this program.
