Rowan County 4-H Horse Club and Youth Fun Show

Planning Unit: Rowan County CES

Major Program: Agriculture & Natural Resources

Plan of Work: Youth & Adult Leadership Development

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The 4-H program within Rowan County had been missing a certified horse program. The biggest hurdle faced in implementing this program was the cost of the necessary kit. Myself and the other 4H agent were able to speak with the Equine program specialist for 4H and obtain a horse kit on loan that could be utilized to start a Horse Club within the county.

The next hurdle began with finding a volunteer who would be willing to run this program and go through the process of obtaining the certifications that were required. A member of the community reached out and expressed her interest in being that volunteer, as well as recruiting another volunteer to also assist with the program.

The Horse Club currently has 20 youth participants, as well as a waiting list of those who would like to join in the future. Students have been meeting at the farm of the certified volunteer to learn the ends and out of owning and caring for a horse. This will be the first year that students from the Horse Club will be participating in the horse show at the Kentucky State Fair.

Through this program, I have noticed many students growing into their leadership capabilities and building confidence that they had lacked previously. I have also observed that many of the older participants continue to assist and work with younger or less experienced participants within the club. The hope is for this program to continue to grow and flourish and allow these students to develop their confidence and leadership abilities.
