Compared to the national average, Kentucky is one of the most challenged states dealing with rom the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) indicate an average of 10.69% of Kentuckians aged 12 or older have used illicit drugs over the past month. substance misuse, substance use disorder, and overdose. Percentage estimates for 2019-2020 Communities throughout the state have established substance use recovery programs to support those seeking to overcome addiction. Substance use recovery involves a process of healing the brain. Research shows that during recovery, adding in practices to take care of the body and mind, such as healthy nutrition and being physically active helps the brain heal faster.

The UK Healthy Choices for Your Recovering Body is a nutrition and physical activity curriculum designed to support individuals in substance use recovery. This seven-lesson program was implemented by the Oldham County Nutrition Education Program Assistant by partnering with Roederer Correctional Institute Substance Abuse Recovery Program. Seventeen individuals completed the program. 

Pre/post data comparisons show that because of this program:

  1. 100 percent intend to be more physically active as part of their recovery. 
  2. 82 percent improved food safety knowledge.
  3. 60 percent reported improved confidence to manage food resources.
  4. 82 percent reported improved confidence in Beverage Behavior Changes.

“I have learned what to look for in my diabetic meals”

“I have learned how important my eating habits and my physical activity is to my recovery.”
