Planning Unit: Greenup County CES

Major Program: Local Food Systems

Plan of Work: Sustainability of Family Farms and Environmental Stewardship

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

The Greenup County Farmers Market was established in 2004 with farmer vendors only. As the market grew and became more established in the community, some local artisans became interested in participating as vendors.

The Greenup County Farmers Market has now grown to over 40 vendor members that offer a variety of handmade and homemade items along with fresh fruits, vegetables, and value-added consumables. The market is open each Saturday at the Greenup County Extension Office building and has added two satellite locations in other areas of the county - at the request of those communities. Customer count records indicate a base of 350 with the market earning over $100,000 in sales in 2023.

These successes led to securing funding from the Kentucky Office of Agriculture Policy with a match from the Greenup County Fiscal Court that will build a permanent pavilion.  The Pavilion was a dream of the vendors for the past five years.  The Greenup County Extension Agents worked through committee meetings, and hours of searching for grants.  With the assistance of local partners and Kentucky Center for Agriculture and Rural Development the dream became reality.  The pavilion now serves as home for the Greenup County Farmers Market.
