Plan of Work: Horticulture

Outcome: Initial Outcome

According to the latest census of agriculture only 2% of Americans feed the other 98% of the population.  It becomes increasingly important to educate the public about local foods systems, agritourism and generally increase awareness about agriculture.  Therefore, the Simpson County Ag Advisory Council identified the need to host a farm tour focusing on education for Simpson County residents.

The farm tour took place on a Saturday to accommodate the majority of resident's work schedules.  A charter bus was rented and taken to surrounding counties to showcase horticultural operations that may be of interest to folks living in Simpson County.  Previously, there had bee in-county tours that have taken place in all quadrants within the Simpson County borders.  The tour showcased a flower farm, a vineyard and winery and large-scale grower that produces horticultural plants in thirteen different greenhouses.  The Simpson County Extension Office partnered with the Simpson County Agriculture Foundation to rent the bus and keep participant costs to a minimum.  At each stop, the owner of the farmer explained their operation and answered all questions that participants had.

The tour consisted of 25 Simpson County residents.  At the conclusion of the tour, 100% of participants reported that they had increased their knowledge about horticulture and agritourism.  100% reported that they would like to attend a similar type tour in the future.  Many participants patronized the businesses as we were there and indicated they would return in the future.
