Youth Field Day in Memory of Philip Konopka

Author: Kennedy Perkins

Planning Unit: Lewis County CES

Major Program: Agriculture & Natural Resources

Plan of Work: Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

There are many youth in our county that are unaware of the importance of Agriculture. Philip Konopka, our previous agent, was an advocate for agriculture especially, when it involved the youth of Lewis County. Philip was a great man and even better educator so in order to keep his legacy alive, the Buffalo Trace Agents decided to target the youth of our county.
The field day took place at the Tollesboro Lions Club Fairgrounds on April 19th, 2024, where all Lewis County 3rd graders were excited for a day full of learning and fun! The main objectives for the day were sun safety, healthy eating/exercise, milk production, honey production, and seed production. Each station discussed information as well as had hands-on activities.
The field day had 172 people that attended, with 122 being 3rd graders.
This field day would not have been possible without all the volunteers, support, and local business. Partners included The Konopka Family, Mason County Master Gardeners, Mason County Extension Staff, Fleming County Extension Staff, Carter County Extension Staff, Lewis County Extension Staff, Rips Farm Center, Tollesboro Lions Club, The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife, Gary Hamilton Ag & Natural Resource Agent in Montgomery County, Holly Bowman Ag & Natural Resource Agent Bracken County, and all those that helped along the way.
The youth participants truly learned a lot about Agriculture and those that knew Philip were able to walk down memory lane. Signs and posters were hung up all around the fairgrounds of old sayings he would say. The 3rd graders absolutely loved it and are excited for next year!
