As Cooperative Extension Agents, we rely on educational materials to aid in total county program development of programs and volunteers. I worked with co-worker, Cathy Weaver to develop a 4-H Camp Counselor Training Manual. The manual was designed to equip 4-H Professionals with the tools and skills necessary to effectively train summer camp volunteer counselors. The 4-H Camp Counselor Training Manual provides educational opportunities for volunteers on relevant subject-matter, organizational leadership strategies and policies, and procedures related to camp and risk management practices. A well-trained, knowledgeable, prepared and capable counselor staff will help ensure a smooth and successful camp experience for all involved. This manual was presented to 4-H Youth Development Professionals at NAE4HA and at Kentucky 4-H Camping In-service. As a result, 4-H Professionals can work through the manual and discover ways to integrate the content into their own 4-H Camp Counselor Training Program, or, how to utilize the manual to plan their own Counselor Development Activity, if they do not currently have an effective Training Program. As a result of implementing new and extensive training for our teen leaders, our camping week has had minimal issues, many of our teen leaders have gone on to serve successfully on summer camp staff, and have become successful, contributing adults.
