Success StoryEC Extension Office Welcome Reception and Open House

EC Extension Office Welcome Reception and Open House

Author: Laura-Grace Vincent

Planning Unit: Edmonson County CES

Major Program: Community Engagement

Plan of Work: Youth and Adult Leadership Development

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The problem To host a welcome reception for new FCS/4H agent and our new Program Assistant. This reception was a way for the community to come and meet the new agent and program assistant and also offer any ideas they had as far as programming is concerned because the county has been without an FCS agent for some time. This open house event also gave our community a chance to tour our facility, learn first hand what extension does, gain knowledge in services provided, and take home some free giveaways.

The educational program response We created our own Extension Office brochure and Program Interest form to help community members identify and recommend needed resources and services. The 3 agents created tables with centerpieces that showcased/represented each of our programming areas (FCS, Ag, 4-H and Homemakers) We gave out recipes, UK freebies, Chop Chop magazines, Garden Calendars and did an hourly drawing for door prizes.

The participants/target audience: Homemakers, volunteers, patrons, business leaders/owners, government officials, and any one who generally do not normally access our services.

Other partners (if applicable) EC Homemakers, Morgan Esters with 270yardcards, KY Farm Bureau and Bank of Edmonson County, EC Cattleman's

Program impact or participant response. The open house was a success, we had many(over 50) people who stopped in who had never heard of our program or visited our facility. We are already seeing an increase in participants in our workshops and classes, phone calls and emails asking for services have increased as well. It is planned to become a yearly event with addition of hands-on activities such as wreath making, recipe demos, and food tasting and others to showcase what is offered in our office.
