The Farm at Rough River is more than just a small farm; it’s a testament to the resilience and determination of a family committed to stewarding the earth and enriching the lives of those around them. The Nicoali Family moved to Grayson County as military veteran family, looking for land to provide wholesome, locally sourced food to their family, and community. Guided by interest, hard work, and dedication, they were able to transform their small farm into a thriving hub of agricultural products and agri-tainment. Part of their success has been due to their collaboration with the local Extension Agent for Agriculture and Natural Resource Agent, whose guidance and resources have enabled them to implement best practices in sustainable farming, animal husbandry, and crop management. They have maximized the productivity of their land, ensuring the health and vitality of their produce, forages, and livestock. The Nicoali’s have taken every opportunity to develop their marketing and farming skills- attending Fruit and Vegetable Conferences, extension programming, marketing programs, KY Proud programs, etc. They have also taken advantage of the expertise and programs from the local soil conservation and agriculture development council. They have worked diligently to make sure all their products are processed and created safely. Due to their success, they are opening a larger market building on their farm and are now expanding into educational field trips for students and families. 

Their typical customer base is lake-going patrons. However, through the help of social media, word of mouth, and their product testimonials, they have reached a greater audience in the community and surrounding counties. They are also valuable participants in the Grayson County Farmer’s Market, where they participate in WIC, Senior Vouchers, and SNAP/EBT. They are even members of the KY Farm Bureau Certified Farm Market. Their hard work and diligence is evident in some numbers that the grower shared with the agent. From their first year of production to their fourth year- they were able to increase their gross income by 720%! Each year they have found new ways to create revenue. In addition to vegetables, they now offer pasture-raised pork and lamb, canned jams, jellies, relishes, and baked goods. They have also made some investments in a new high-tunnel, market building, and breeding stock. 
 

As proud members of the local agriculture economy, they recognize the vital role that small farms play in sustaining rural communities and driving economic growth. Their success in the agriculture community has led them into leadership roles in the agriculture community as well. The Nicolais sit on the Farmer’s Market board of directors, Agriculture Development Council, Ag Council, and Farm to Fork committee. The ANR agent also worked with their farm to host leaders in the Grayson County Chamber of Commerce. Through our participation in farmers markets, direct sales, and agritourism, they contribute to the vitality of the local economy. Their story is a great example of success when passion, dedication, education and resourcefulness comes together.
