Camp-A-Palooza

Author: Mary Anne Garnett

Planning Unit: Christian County CES

Major Program: Camping

Plan of Work: Cultivating community leadership, engagement and pride through educational and experiential learning.

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Christian County 4-H was unable to go to camp this year due to storm damage at West Kentucky    4-H Camp. We had to tell all our campers that they were not going to camp, which was heartbreaking. After multiple Zoom calls and lots of planning, we were able to put together “Camp-A-Palooza!”. This project day resulted in 80 kids participating in full day of camp within 5 hours. With various camp classes covering natural resources, cooking, exercising, and art the campers then had a wonderful lunch. Once lunch completed fun shops were offered. The West Kentucky 4-H Camp Staff was able to travel from Dawson Springs and coordinate a Mega relay and Sally down the ally dance. The community and staff of the Christian County Cooperative Extension Office came together and made this project day a reality on short notice.

This day was successful with the campers that were able to come. The kids got a taste of “camp magic” while they were here and were able to experience a little bit of camp at home. This can lead to excitement for future camp weeks and bring a sense of personal development to the children that this event impacted. During and after the event, the kids were talking about “how cool” their classes were and how they could not wait for the next events and even how they could not wait for camp.
