Aspiring Chefs sharpen their skills

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Greenup County Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Agent collaborated with the Greenup County 4-H Youth Development Agent to offer the Superstar Chef Camp program to 17 students. 1 volunteer worked with students in a hands-on educational setting to teach important life skills. A pre-test/ post-test evaluation was conducted to determine learning outcomes. As a result of the program, students gained the following knowledge and skills:

•             47% more students identified the right way to hold a knife.

•             24% more students identified the right way to guide food when using a knife.

•             29% more students identified how germs get transferred to food.

•             82% more students identified the four steps to safe food.

•             41% more students identified when to use a meat thermometer.

•             29% more students identified how many minutes a day they should be physically active to stay healthy.

•             35% more students identified the correct technique for accurately measuring ingredients.

•             17.6% more students identified the safe position for a pot handle while cooking.

Following the program, students also gained confidence in their food preparation skills:

•             17.6% more students agreed that they could make a meal with fruit.

•             17.6% more students agreed that they could make a meal with vegetables.

•             17.6% more students agreed that they could help make a family meal.

•             29.4% more students agreed that they could cut up food using a knife.

•             29.4% more students agreed that they could measure ingredients correctly.

•             17.6% more students agreed that they could follow recipe directions.

•             23.5% more students agreed that they could use a recipe with help.

•             17.6% more students agreed that they could cook eggs on a stove.

In addition, as a result of attending the Superstar Chef Camp program, students plan to make the following behavior changes:

•             94% of students can identify healthy foods.

•             100% of students plan to drink more water.

•             88% of students plan to drink less soda.

•             88% of students plan to be more physically active.

•             88% of students plan to eat more fruits.

•             88% of students plan to eat more vegetables.

•             82% of students plan to try new foods.

One of the participants when home after the second day of camp and prepared dinner for her family with minimal help from her parents. Her mother said she was impressed by the skills her daughter had gained during the program.
