Plan of Work: Promoting Leadership and Community Development
Outcome: Initial Outcome
Many people find that spending time "crafting" enhances mental wellbeing, creates community connections, and can be a creative outlet for anyone of any age. After multiple inquiries were made about a crafting club, the Greenup County Community Arts Program agreed to create one. The membership chose the name Greenup County Creative Crafters Club. This club began meeting in 2023 on the third Thursday of each month with volunteer leaders and a growing membership.
Leadership development is a driving force behind this new club. Each club meeting is led by a different club member who has volunteered to facilitate a project. The leader is responsible for choosing the project, making a supply list, communicating plans with the agent, and leading their designated meeting. Most members have never had this experience before.
Public speaking and leading a group in a project are skills that must be practiced. New leaders have expressed the feeling that a group of fellow crafters is a safe space to practice speaking and teaching without the fear of being scrutinized by a stranger. This new crafting community is not only providing a creative outlet, but a learning space for life skills and volunteerism that could grow into opportunities for leadership.
