With Bullitt County having a significantly low unemployment rate (4.2% as of May 2018-US Labor Statistics) it is often misunderstood that jobs are plentiful and non competitive.  In reality, even entry level jobs are competitive.  According to theladders.com (HR portal and Professional Recruitment Company) Entry level jobs often have 115 applicants for one job.  Of the 115 applicants, often only 4-5% are selected for initial interviews.  For a new High School, or College graduate this time can be confusing and stressful.  The first step in making yourself marketable is having a strong resume.  On average a hiring professional will spend 5-7 seconds on a resume, so it is extremely important to create a resume that is easy to read and direct.

In the spring of 2018 the graduating class of North Bullitt High School in Shepherdsville, KY was given the opportunity to take a selection of workshops in resume writing, interview etiquette, marketing and mock interviews.  The goal of this workshop was to help all seniors that are on the Career Ready or College Ready pathways.  Of the 314 future graduates, 303 (or 96%) voluntarily completed the workshop.  The Bullitt County Extension Office worked directly with the NBHS Youth Service Center, the Senior English Department, and NBHS administrators.   After completing the 4 day workshop, the 303 seniors were surveyed on their successes:

-93% Developed a better appreciation for the job hiring process

-61% Developed their first professional resume

-47% Had never had a job interview before the workshop

-79% Feel more confident going into a job interview as a result of the mock job interview

-41% Didn't know the importance of a professional resume prior to starting the workshop

-17% Of the future graduates have already had at least one job interview for a full-time career post graduation
