Major Program: Agriculture and Extension Leadership Development

Plan of Work: 2023 Agriculture and Horticulture Economic Support Programs

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Volunteer leaders based in the Cooperative Extension Service can become an integral part of the communities where they live.  The Kenton County Agriculture Development Council is a community citizen program that oversees the funds for the Tobacco Settlement funds from state funds.   As part of this program there are funds available for non-traditional direct to farmer program. One such program is the Market Shed Program where as each county may qualify for funds to build a farmers Market structure within a community.

One member of the Kenton County Agriculture Development Council stepped forward to lead on pursuing these funds to build a structure in Kenton County.  Under his guidance markets were considered and the Independence Farmers Market showed the most interest since they were currently selling from an open parking lot.   Along with the Agriculture and Natural Resources Agent, this council member has been meeting with Kenton County Administration over the past 1 ½ years and the site began development in March, 2024.   Thanks to funding from Kenton County Administration and this member being awarded more funding from a local foundation, this project is on track to be completed fall of 2024.

This shelter will impact Kenton County Farmers, Kenton County Fiscal Court, and the City of Independence.
