“The U.S. agriculture sector extends beyond the farm business to include a range of farm-related industries. Agriculture, food, and related industries contributed 5.6 percent to U.S. gross domestic product and provided 10.4 percent of U.S. employment; Americans' expenditures on food amount to 12.8 percent of household budgets, on average,” (Economic Research Service USDA, 2024). Therefore, to promote Agriculture Education and programs of study to youth the University of Kentucky Martin Gatton College of Agriculture Food and Environment held its 54th Annual 4-H/FFA Field Day.

A large collaborative effort from: (a) six donors who provided materials; (b) two governmental organizations; (c) faculty and staff from eight academic departments; (d) all UKY Martin Gatton CAFE academic departments, and (e) over 200 undergraduate students came together to facilitate all contests and events.

The need for Positive Youth Development and life skill building has been evident since COVID-19, and over 80 4-H and FFA Clubs participated in the event from three different states. Additionally, there was a participation increase of 169% and 118% increase in the years 2023 and 2024 respectively.

One club participating in the field day reported that it prepared them to compete in the state livestock judging contest and the horse knowledge contest. The club was able to take the top position due to practicing knowledge during the 4-H/FFA Field Day events.

Additional outcomes reported by 100% of the 4-H Youth Development Agents in attendance stated that it allows youth from across the Commonwealth to understand the university's connection to 4-H and FFA. Two high school senior youth committed to attending the University of Kentucky because of participating in the field day events.
