Planning Unit: Christian County CES

Major Program: Camping

Plan of Work: Cultivating community leadership, engagement and pride through educational and experiential learning.

Outcome: Initial Outcome

There are times within the realm of an Extension Agents job that we have to learn how to pivot when the time arrives and that is exactly what Christian County 4-H had to do. We were excited, buses rented, bags packed, paperwork finished and almost a good night rest to go to 4-H Camp when the unexpected happened. A storm that affected Dawson Springs, West Kentucky 4-H Camp and many in our county. This storm had the power off at West Kentucky 4-H Camp from Sunday morning to Tuesday night causing 4-H Camp to lose all their refrigerator food. There were trees down all throughout the property with some taking out the low ropes course. This in tell caused 4-H Camp to be postponed, breaking hearts of many campers and volunteers. This is when we decided that something fun still needed to occur in their lives for the week so we started planning Camp-A-Palooza.

Camp-A-Palooza was an opportunity for 83 Christian County campers to still have programs that were going to be offered during 4-H Camp such as gaga ball, wood crafts, science experiments, tie dye, floral design, and with the help and support of West Kentucky 4-H Camp staff, Mega Relay. The volunteers that were going to be leading classes came to teach their camp classes bringing smiles to the campers faces and their own. Other volunteers stepped up in the community to help prepare food for the campers and to ensure that the day was successful. We also could not have made the day possible without the support from the Kentucky 4-H Office and the Kentucky 4-H Foundation.

Even better news for Christian County 4-H Camp participants is that 4-H Camp was able to be rescheduled for July 25-28. This was another team camping effort to make it possible with finding a small window of open spaces to be able to group as a whole and keep it possible for all to still attend.
