The problem Taking a soil test can be a daunting task for many, especially those who have never taken a test before. Gathering the soil sample correctly is a key component to getting good sample results. The correct depth, enough probes in varying spots in the field and proper handling are important while taking a sample. To assist producers Crittenden County Extension has started utilizing plastic buckets with directions on the side and soil probes with tape marking the proper sampling depth for clients to check out of the office.
The educational program response The clients seem better prepared and more comfortable when leaving the office with directions to refer back to and a soil probe with markings on it. One farmer has completely changed the way he samples his hay fields based on the information he received when borrowing the soil sample supplies from the office.
The participants/target audience The audience has ben clients who utilize the free soil testing offered by Crittenden County Extension Office.
