With parents and children engrossed in their mobile devices for hours on end, face-to-face interactions have declined, hindering relationship development. It's crucial to acknowledge how technology, among other factors, has driven a wedge between loved ones, emphasizing the problem of prioritizing meaningful relationships over technology.
A hanging basket workshop was held at the Bracken County Extension Office to bring family members together to encourage the missed bonding while creating their own personalized basket. It was also perfectly scheduled to be held a week before Mother’s Day to honor some of the most important people in our lives. The class began with a lesson catered towards the types of focal flowers and filler flowers available for choosing. Thus, breaking down different characteristics and what each flower offered to pollinators, to see what flowers would be best fit to your location. The soil characteristics need and how to use coconut liners were also discussed.
Lastly, families were able to then create their own special basket that will bloom throughout the year like their love. The audience in attendance included 19 participants, creating 15 different baskets. The families stretched from daughter and mother to grandmother and son. It also hosted two third generation families. The participants left the workshop expressing joy with not only time spent together but also the knowledge gained regarding flower choices and proper care. Hopefully, as days passed when caring for their basket it serves as a reminder of the time spent together.
