Master Gardener Juleps and Tulips Program
Author: Mary Dossett
Planning Unit: McCracken County CES
Major Program: Master Gardener
Plan of Work: McCracken County Horticulture Education Outreach
Outcome: Intermediate Outcome
The Lakes of Paducah reached out needing to get their residents more involved in hands-on activities that involve gardening. Three master gardener, The Horticulture Agent, Horticulture Assistant, and several office staff of the center volunteered to help. Bud Qualk, Master Gardener president, lead the program and educated the residents about the plants he brought. The volunteers handed out three different types of plants and the residents placed them in the planters. They wore their homemade derby hats while drinking mint juleps or lemonade for the Derby. The Horticulture Agent helped Bud educate the residents on how to take care of their plants such as watering, how to plant them, and how much sunlight.
The participants/target audience were the residents of the assisted living center. We had about 30 residents participate in the program. The residents had a wonderful time and smiled the whole time. The response from the program is intermediate because they will take this gardening education and share their knowledge with others. The program coordinator also showed interest in having us back for more programs.
