The Mercer County Farmers Market has been under the guidance of Mercer County Cooperative Extension for more than 20 years. In the past two years the market has seen an increase in membership and market participation. After much discussion the market voted to branch out on their own. This move comes as a testament to the market's growth and popularity within the community, as well as its increasing autonomy and confidence.
The Mercer County Horticulture Agent connected the farmers market board to resources to help prepare the market to take over the full responsibilities that keeps the market going. The market met with KCARD where they were provided information on how to open their own bank account, tax information and other government reporting responsibilities. The horticulture agent recommended a money handling policy and has helped transition the market into taking full responsibility for state programs like WIC and Senior vouchers. As the market continues to transition into full ownership the horticulture agent will work with them in an advisory role and continue to partner together with educational programs.
As the farmers market embarks on this exciting new chapter, it remains committed to its core values of supporting local producers, the local economy, and fostering community connections.
