'365 Days of Gardening' Raised Bed Gardening Series

Author: Bethany Wilson

Planning Unit: Pulaski County CES

Major Program: Horticulture, Consumer and Home

Plan of Work: Wellness & Healthy Communities-NEW

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

This home gardening series is in its second year, created by the Pulaski Co Horticulture Agent and one Extension Master Gardener.  During summer 2023, the program had over 30 different participants over the 5 monthly programs. During 2024, 72 people participated in 7 monthly programs.

This Pulaski County Extension Horticulture program brought together gardening enthusiasts of all skill levels, empowering them with knowledge and skills to cultivate thriving gardens in limited spaces. Through monthly programs, hands-on demonstrations (a new Hugelkultur bed was constructed), and expert-led discussions, participants learned the ins and outs of this extremely popular gardening technique.

Participants gained practical knowledge on how to design, build, and maintain raised beds, tailored to their specific needs and space constraints as well as how to grow a number of new crops.

Sessions included Hugelkultur Gardening, Slip and Seed Sweet Potatoes, Small-Scale Grains, Let’s Grow Stir Fry, Scents of Home: Herbs, Food 4 Thought: Garlic, and Winter Gardening.

Sessions began in March 2024 and finished in September 2024. Every session included an indoor talk and an outdoor, hands-on component. Local experts were brought in for several of the programs.

Through this Cooperative Extension program, we not only cultivated a productive, raised bed demonstration garden but also fostered a sense of community among participants. Together, we celebrated the successes of gardening while nurturing a deeper connection to our food and to one another.
