Planning Unit: Barren County CES

Major Program: Food Preparation and Preservation

Plan of Work: Improving Nutrition of Limited Resource Kentuckians

Outcome: Initial Outcome

In an effort to include and expand the reach of Extension and Extension Programs, the Barren County Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences, the Barren County Agent for 4-H and Youth Development and the Barren County Program Assistant have teamed up Glasgow City Schools Migrant Education Program directors to form a Migrant Club for youth and adults.

During the monthly meetings, adults work with the Family and Consumer Sciences agent to learn about healthy cooking and learn new recipes and skills. Recipes come from the Nutrition Calendar as well as planeatmove.com. During the meetings, participants are able to view the cooking demonstration and then given the opportunity to prepare the recipe as a group. Some months the adults and youth both work on creating the recipe together and some months adults make the recipe while the youth work on a craft to enter into the county fair. Each time, youth and adults share and sample the meal together.

All individuals attending the Migrant Club meetings reported that prior to the beginning of this club that they were not familiar with Extension or the services that are offered by the Extension Office. Of the adults attending, one hundred percent reported that they have learned ways to incorporate healthy, budget friendly meals. One hundred percent of participants reported that they have enjoyed learning ways to work with their kids in the kitchen. Additionally, one hundred percent reported that they use the Spanish Nutrition Calendar and/or Spanish recipes from planeatmove.com.
