Herbicide resistant weeds have become a significant factor in making weed management decisions for soybean and corn producers. Through surveys of county agents and other clientele and samples submitted to the Weed Science Herbarium, we have been able to document the rapid spread of herbicide-resistant weeds such as Palmer amaranth and waterhemp across Kentucky during the past eight years. To address this concern we continue to be actively engaged in delivery of educational programs and conducting research that targets herbicide resistant weed issues.  These efforts have included field research and demonstration trials to illustrate best management practices for weeds such as Palmer amaranth, waterhemp, and marestail (also known as horseweed), which is another widespread herbicide-resistant weed problem.  Specific educational efforts have included Weed Resistance Field Schools, field days, and state and local meetings with crop producers, crop consultants, applicators, and other agricultural business personnel who are dealing with this issue. Because herbicide resistant weeds will likely remain a significant concern, more grain crop producers are beginning to adopt a wider array of diverse weed management options.
