Outcome: Initial Outcome
Clients asked for a class to learn more about quilting for brand-new beginners who have never used their machines before and more experienced quilters.
The Basic Sewing class learned how to use their sewing machines and made a pillowcase.
The heirloom class discussed 3-D elements on quilts and how to add these elements using a basic sewing machine.
The classes were done twice on different days to be available for new participants.
We set the age requirement for 18 and up but some kids came with their moms.
Rachael Davis 4-H Agent and I (Kelly Alsip, FCS Agent) asked a local quilt shop (Muppin's Sewing Emporium) if the owner, Cheryl “Muppin” Sleboda, could share her knowledge via workshops. She agreed to do Heirloom and Basic Sewing Classes. The classes were for 18 and up. There were twenty-two total ladies in attendance.
The Basic Sewing class:
Some participants never used their sewing machines before, they left the workshop knowing how to use their machines and how to prevent common issues. They even learned how to use the automatic threaders on the newer machines.
All participants completed a pillowcase by the end of the workshop. They went home with the design to make more if they wanted to. They were also shown where to get more designs for bigger projects that are still using the new skills that they just learned.
Participants gained contacts in the quilting community and have decided to continue contact via quilt groups or waitlists for new workshops.
