Cattle Grading

Author: April Wilhoit

Planning Unit: Mason County CES

Major Program: Farm Management, Economics and Policy

Plan of Work: Adapting to Changing Agricultural Markets

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Kentucky is the largest cattle producing state east of the Mississippi River.  A lot of great cattle are being grown and sold in the markets around the commonwealth however some of are lacking in feed and nutrition.  Additionally, knowing and understanding what the cattle markets are looking for is also an important management tool for farmers.

The Buffalo Trace County Area has hosted the Cattle Grading/Body Condition program for many years.  2024 was the first year that it was hosted in Fleming County.

Attendance for the first year was at 103 folks.  Those in attendance were able to see live cattle and comparisons between the different body conditions and such.  Those in attendance also learned some tips and tricks on determining the age of calves as well.

After the event, one person in attendance shared an email about their experience:  “We wanted to thank-you and the team for the cattle grading and pricing  presentation last night.  It was our first time to attend and it was very educational.  Jim Akers was awesome.  It so much better to see the cows and grading then to just see pictures and read and discuss.”
