Plan of Work: Supporting Local Agriculture
Outcome: Initial Outcome
According to the Lexington Herald, in 2022, more people moved to Kentucky than in any other year. Many of these new residents moved into Menifee County. Some of the new residents had a farming history, but many have moved from an urban lifestyle to a new rural one.
These residents are looking for ways for their farm to work for them. Small farms and limited-acre farms bring different challenges to new residents. Knowing where to begin and how to make all needed purchases. The Menifee ANR Council and ANR/4-H Agent applied and received a small grant through the University of Kentucky ANR Office that will work with new residents and small farmers willing to work with the project. Beef producers, Equine Producers, and small ruminant farmers will be eligible. They will have a menu of options from which producers may choose practices to study how they work on their farms. The first meeting for applicants is May 2. Applications are due May 17. Projects will be started depending on what is on their applications. Many new residents are excited about this opportunity.
