Morgan County Farmers Utlize Decision Tools Provided by Ag Extension

Author: Sarah Fannin

Planning Unit: Morgan County CES

Major Program: Beef

Plan of Work: 3. Building Beef and Forage Production

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Beef and forage production remains the backbone of the agricultural economy in Morgan County.  Supply chain issues and inputs costs for both enterprises have increased drastically. There are more challenges hindering the retention of family farms.  From seed and fertilizer selection to machinery repair and feed purchases, all tools are needed to make the best economic choices for the farm.

More farmers are using decision making tools offered by Ag Extension including soil testing, hay testing, forage planning, bull soundness exams and weed control recommendations to reduce costs.  Morgan County farmers are also inquiring about ways to successfully pass their farm to heirs.

As a result:

*Twelve farmers report saving approximately $25,000 in fertilizer costs using soil testing results,

*Two farmers are purchasing new bulls to save their calf crops valued at $48,000 after utilizing the Bull Soundness Exams offered by the ANR program,

*Three farmers have worked with agent and specialist to develop new grazing plans and renovate hay ground to maximize forage utilization and production.  Two farmers have reported increasing their grazing season by two months.

*Two farmers are engaged in active estate planning to ensure retention of farm within their family without additional costs to heirs.
