Major Program: Kentucky Extension Homemaker Association

Plan of Work: Volunteerism and Leadership Development

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The Scott County Extension Agent for Family and Consumer sciences collaborated with the Scott County Extension Homemakers to make a globe impact with their Dresses for Ghana international service project.

Homemakers gathered at the Scott County Extension office with a common goal: to make a difference in the lives of children halfway across the globe. Armed with their sewing machines, fabric, and a spirit of generosity, the members of Scott County Extension Homemakers embarked on a project that would not only showcase their talents but also demonstrate the power of community-driven initiatives.

The idea was simple yet profound, to make 100 dresses for children in Ghana and the homemakers were eager to lend their skills to this worthy cause.

Scheduling multiple days of work, the group gathered regularly at the extension office, setting up their sewing machines and cutting out patterns with precision and care. Each dress was made with love, with the hope that it would bring joy and comfort to a child in need. The homemakers were united in their mission to make a difference, and their enthusiasm was contagious.

After many hours of hard work, the last dress was sewn, and the group celebrated their accomplishment. But their work is not over yet, the dresses will be carefully packaged and sent off to Ghana, where they would be distributed to children in need.

The impact of this project extends far beyond the 100 dresses that were made. It is a testament to the power of community, showing that when people come together with a shared purpose, they can achieve remarkable things. The children who will receive the dresses may never know the names of the people who made them, but they will surely feel the love and care that went into each stitch.

The group of homemakers in Scott County, may have started out as just a few individuals with sewing machines, but through their collective effort, they were able to make a tangible difference in the lives of children in Ghana. They will continue their efforts by making shorts for children and sanitary pads or women in Ghana in the months to come.
