Each generation is unique from the generation before and after it. These differences are attributed to the different societal influences present during the developmental years. Generational differences can lead to misunderstanding and create conflict at home, work, or in the community. By gaining knowledge of different generations and their characteristics we can develop strong generational relationships and increase opportunities to build strong family, work, and community relationships. Pike County Family and Consumer Sciences Agent taught the lesson “Understanding Generational Differences” to 14 participants. The lesson focused on six generations including their values, workplace characteristics, and volunteer roles.
86% of participants reported being able to recognize and distinguish between six different generations’ characteristics and values. 93% of participants reported being able to analyze how changes and events in society have influenced generational perspectives. 93% of participants reported being able to examine how generational values are reflected in family, work, and social behaviors. Leaders from each homemaker club in attendance at the lesson received information to present to their individual clubs to further extend the reach of this information.
