Nurturing Future Agripreneurs: A 4-H Livestock Judging Triumph

Author: Lydia Gosney

Planning Unit: Pendleton County CES

Major Program: Agriculture & Natural Resources

Plan of Work: Implementing environmental stewardship at home, on the farm and in the community through STEaM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture Sustainability, & Mathematics) and natural resource education

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The Problem: In a digital age where disconnect from agriculture is rampant among youth, the challenge lay in cultivating an appreciation for livestock farming and instilling essential life skills such as critical thinking, public speaking and teamwork.

The Educational Program Response: Enter the 4-H Livestock Judging program, a beacon of experiential learning in agricultural communities. With a curriculum designed to immerse participants in the world of animal evaluation, this program provided a hands-on approach to understanding livestock conformation, marketability, and industry standards.

The Participants/Target Audience: Thirteen eager youths, ranging from 9-16 years of age, with diverse backgrounds and experiences, stepped up to the challenge. Some hailed from farming families, while others were city-dwellers curious about the agricultural world. Regardless of their backgrounds, they shared a common passion for animals and a desire to learn.

Other Partners: The success of the program was bolstered by the support of local farmers, agricultural experts, and community leaders. These partners generously offered their time, resources, and expertise to ensure the program's success. From hosting practice sessions on their farms to providing valuable insights into industry trends, their contributions were invaluable.

Program Impact or Participant Response: Participants experienced a transformational journey, developing not only their knowledge of animal husbandry but also invaluable life skills. For some, the program ignited a newfound passion for agriculture, inspiring them to pursue careers in the field. Others gained confidence in their ability to think critically and make informed decisions—a skillset they would carry with them into adulthood. But perhaps the most significant impact was the sense of camaraderie and belonging fostered among the participants. As the program continues and accolades are bestowed upon the participants, it comes clear that their success extends far beyond the ribbons and trophies. They have become stewards of the land, ambassadors for agriculture, and leaders of tomorrow—all thanks to the transformative power of the 4-H Livestock Judging program.
