Making Changes at a Young Age

Author: Kati Noble

Planning Unit: Breathitt County CES

Major Program: Nutrition and Food Systems General

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

According to the State of Childhood Obesity, 24% of children 10-17 are obese. One way to combat this issue is by providing children with information on the importance of eating healthy and physical activity, as well as the knowledge to choose healthier food options.

Breathitt County NEP Assistant Senior, in partnership with Jackson City School, taught LEAP (Literacy, Eating, and Activity for Primary) curriculum to a 3rd grade class. During one visit, students tried a healthy snack, learned the importance of eating healthy foods, as well as being able to identify healthy food choices by reading food labels. Students also learned the importance of food safety and how to properly wash their hands. 100% of students indicated that they would start making healthier options and would be food safe. 71% of students indicated that they would start reading food labels, by entry and exit forms. One student stated, “The fruit dip tasted better than the sucker I was eating.”
