Madison County 4-H Banquet and "All-Stars" program

Author: Julia Reid

Planning Unit: Madison County CES

Major Program: Leadership

Plan of Work: Develop and Strengthen Leadership and Life Skills

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Madison County 4-H has recently had limited participation in the Kentucky 4-H Achievement process. We know participation in the achievement program allows youth to win awards like scholarships to teen conference, and other fun perks. We also know that youth and adults in Madison county work hard and are worthy of being recognized for their dedication to the 4-H program.

The Madison County 4-H Agents decided to recognize leaders and youth while also trying to address a declining participation in certain programs that we offer. So the 4-H agents adapted the "All Star" program. Youth must complete at least one communications event, be involved in 4-H programs,  participate in 4-H clubs, put entries in the county fair, and complete an achievement application in order to be eligible for these awards.

The 4-H agents had 10 youth complete achievement applications, and all of them were successful on the state level! We recognized over 50 youth at our banquet, and 5 adult leaders as well. Parents were all beaming and so proud of their children. All of the feedback was positive and encouraging to make this an annual event. We increased participation in the speech and demonstrations contest, we increased participation in the county fair, and more importantly, more youth developed communications skills because of this program!
