Disc Golf is a fast-growing sport for all ages.  It is very similar to regular golf except weighted discs are used to cover the distances to the wire baskets that are mounted onto stands.  Many communities across the commonwealth have disc golf courses in public parks that are free.  The Henry County Recreational Park installed a course that was getting little use, so to create a greater awareness of this sport that is beneficial to all ages the Henry County 4-H program created a 4-H Disc Golf Club.

Healthy lifestyles have been part of the core content for all Kentuckians through the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service for many years and the disc golf club has been a wonderful addition for youth to receive health benefits while learning a new sport.  Club members enjoy the exercise involved, being surrounded by nature, connecting with other youth, breathing fresh air and vitamin D.  Disc golf has been shown to reduce stress while exercising the brain.   The cost is nominal.  For club members discs are provided for free and given to youth who do not have the means to purchase a set.

The club meets weekly during April and May.   The average attendance is 9 to 12 participants a week.  This is the second year for this club and now that members are honing their skills there are several that have competed in youth level competitions around the state.  The goal for the club is to have a four-member team that will compete as a club.  Perhaps the best part of the club is that the members are now encouraging their families to take up the sport which allows the entire family to benefit from the health benefits while enjoying quality family time.
