Homesteading Program
Author: Mary Dossett
Planning Unit: McCracken County CES
Major Program: Master Gardener
Plan of Work: McCracken County Horticulture Education Outreach
Outcome: Long-Term Outcome
The problem we noticed in the community was there was not many homesteading programs offered in the area. The Horticulture agent contacted Miranda Rudolph in Graves County to speak for one of the Master Gardener programs. Miranda did a wonderful job by highlighting the aspects of what homesteading is and how to get started.
The participants/target audience was outstanding and is now the record number for Master Gardener Toolbox programs. We had 80 adults and 7 kids attend the program! There was 13 male and 74 female in attendance. We are trying to increase our male numbers and get more men interested in our gardening programs. So, this was a great success.
The Horticulture Agent handed out surveys to the audience and she received 63 surveys back. Here are the results from those surveys.
The first three questions I had a scale from 1-10.
- Did you learn something new at this presentation ?
Average answer : 8.68 (86.8%)
- Were you inspired to try and/or share what you learned?
Average answer : 8.24 (82.4%)
- Were you pleased with this presentation?
Average answer : 9.17 (91.7%)
- How did you hear about the monthly Toolbox programs

The outcome will be long-term since the participants can take what they learned from the program and either start their own homestead or build onto what they already have. Homesteading can be raising vegetables in the ground/raised beds, raising livestock for food, preparing homemade meals, and so much more.
