KY Extension helping Beginning Honeybee Keepers on getting the supplies they need in Wayne County

Author: Danny Adams

Planning Unit: Wayne County CES

Major Program: Beekeeping

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

KSU and UK Extension help get 17 new beginning bee keepers starter bee hive kits for these seventeen participants. Some of the requirements was the participants get honeybees and join the Wayne County Honeybee Association. Since most of the participants are new bee keepers they need a mentor and a place to get honeybee supplies. Wayne County at this time has no one selling honeybee supplies.

So some of the Wayne County Honeybee Association members invited Jim Goss from Honeybee Connections to tell everyone about the supplies of honeybee packages and nucleus honeybee colonies he sells. New Beginning Honeybee Keepers were in need of bees and colonies and Honeybee Connections are there to meet their needs.

The Wayne County Extension Staff made up of UK and KSU personnel are helping get 20 new honeybee packages and colonies to Wayne County in April and May so our 17 New Beginning Honeybee Keepers will have honeybees to put in their own hives this spring. This meets the requirements for them having the beginning starter bee hive kits. Some bees are being provided by local bee keepers and mentors, but not enough to meet Wayne County Honeybee Keepers needs.

With 30 members in the new Wayne County Honeybee Association this should help provide education and training on raising and caring for honeybees. KSU and UK Extension will help lead along the way through this journey for everyone involved.
