Physical inactivity is a contributing factor to the 41% adult obesity rate in Clinton County (2024 County Health Rankings & Roadmaps). Simple physical activity for families that doesn’t feel like strenuous exercise can be the starting place for the development of healthier lifestyle choices. The Clinton County Extension Office sponsored its annual Pumpkin Walk event to create an awareness of physical activity opportunities and other health resources available in the community. The event also encourages families to be active not only during the event but on a regular basis through participation in identified activities that require limited materials or preparation.

383 youth and adult participants including 65 volunteers and partners representing 25 different agencies were involved in the Pumpkin walk. 80 families completed every activity available at the event. Evaluation data further revealed that 100% of participants learned something that will help children do better in school or at home.

Many participants commented on how they appreciated bonding time with their children and having fun as a family. Families indicated an interest in future programs to assist them with ideas of additional inexpensive things to do together as a family as well as specific preschool and kindergarten activities in math and language. Additional events targeting child development, health, physical activity, and family togetherness will be offered to families throughout the year.
