Success StoryBeef Cattle Genomics an Investment for All Producers

Beef Cattle Genomics an Investment for All Producers

Author: Adam Thomas

Planning Unit: LaRue County CES

Major Program: Beef

Plan of Work: Sustainable Livestock Production

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

The problem

The evolution of expected progeny differences and genomics has many producers searching for resources to help relate them to their commercial cow herds.  As required by KADF guidelines bulls purchased through the CAIP are required to have genomically enhanced epds to qualify for cost share reimbursements.  The question by most is why does this matter to my commercial cattle operation.

The educational program response

LaRue County hosted a program that related the use of these enhanced epds in commercial herds.  The purpose of the program was to provide and answer questions on using epds as a selection criteria to increase profitability.

The participants/target audience

Commercial cattle producers

Seedstock cattle producers

Other partners (if applicable)

Dr. Gordon Jones- Retired Professor of Animal Science- Western Kentucky University

Program impact or participant response.

It was a successful meeting with lots of interest and the target auidence was reached .  Participants left the meeting talking about genomics and taking more knowledge on epds in general.  Most importantly in the days following 4 attendees expressed their plans to use genomics and genomiclly enhanced EPDs in their operations.   Most attendees that were interviewed expressed thier confusion with geneomics and how they had a clearer understanding of how to utilize this new technology.
