Lyon County 4-H hosted the Pennyrile Area Communications Contest where over 50 4-H members from eight counties competed for the opportunity to participate in the state contest.
The area contest, hosted every nine years by Lyon County 4-H, requires many volunteers working together. Twenty volunteers served as judges, eight teen 4-H members served as room hosts and a large number of Lyon County adults and teens set up rooms, served as greeters, runners and clean-up crew. In addition, the Lyon County Homemakers organization provided and served a meal for volunteers and snacks for participants and their families while they waited for scores to be tallied.
The cooperation of Lyon County Elementary staff, teachers and administrators was also key to the success of the event. Co-workers from Lyon County Extension and 4-H Agents from the Pennyrile Area came together to cover every base. The success of this enormous task involving over 200 people was possible only because volunteers believe in the 4-H program and are willing to step out of their comfort zones and up to the task at hand.
Teens and adults who came together to present a successful program also stated that the experience developed and enhanced skills they will continue to use in other 4-H programs and through involvement in other community programs for a lifetime.
